Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting

 My recipe for Perfect Chocolate Cake topped with a finger-licking Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting.


Today marks a special day for Deliciously Yum. My blog is turning 1! Yep, that’s right. It’s our first blogiversary. Yay!

Actually… it was last week. After continuously thinking about what to whip up for this sweet occasion, I cannot believe that I missed it. Like totally and completely. Once I woke up Labor Day morning, I realized two things. One – it’s the unofficial start of fall and Two – I missed my first anniversary. Does that make me a bad bloggie mommy?

Can I make it up to you and Deliciously Yum with chocolate cake? Yes? Good. I am glad we’re still talking the same language ;).


I still remember clicking publish for the very first time. A little unsure about what was going to happen next, but beyond excited to share my recipe for Chewy Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies. Still one of the best cookies I ever made to date.

Looking back, choosing to share a cookie recipe as my first post was definitely the right decision. With 27 unique cookie recipes and counting, I was hinting at my cookie obsession and am more than prepared to continue my deep, long love for all things cookies and crumbles.

I am sure I will feel the same way about Chocolate Cake for my first blogiversary when I look back in the future. I mean, Chocolate Cake with an incredible Chocolate Frosting – there’s no question whether or not I made the right decision.


I am going to be honest. When it comes to cake, I usually am not the biggest fan. I don’t dislike it, but given a choice, I’d probably go for a bar, brownie or any alternative instead.

It’s because I am often left disappointed when it comes to taste and texture of most cakes. Something I was determined to change with this Chocolate Cake creation.


In order to achieve a chocolate cake that tastes like actual chocolate, I melted some of my very favorite dark chocolate bar and infused it in the batter. The same goes for the chocolate frosting. Besides the use of cream cheese, the addition of real chocolate is what makes the frosting so irresistible. Chocolate on chocolate – it’s what dreams are made out of.

Another important factor that makes or breaks a good cake for me is how scrumptious and moist it is. Now spell it with me, this cake is uber M.O.I.S.T. Disappointment was far, far removed from my mind when I took the first bite. Since I finished this cake late in the afternoon, I actually devoured a large piece for dinner. I sure know how to celebrate, don’t I?!


Sprinkles were inevitable, of course. It’s not so much that I am proud to have made it through my first year of blogging, but I couldn’t be more thrilled to get to talk and share with all of you, my readers, multiple times each week.

How humbled and blessed I feel that you make time to follow along and read about my love for food and a few other things, is something I will never be able to put into words. SERIOUSLY. If I didn’t get to read your sweet comments, emails and all the other ways you contact and support me, I don’t think I would have made it a whole year. You keep me going, inspire me, and fuel my tank even when I don’t feel like turning on my oven or rather sleep in. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this blog is as much yours as it is mine. You make it special and help each and every day to make it something I could have never dreamed of. Thank, thank you, thank you. I โ™ฅ your face!

Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting
Yields 20
The moistest and most delicious chocolate cake I've ever had. Plus, a chocolate cream cheese frosting that is to die for. A definite winner!

For the Cake
  1. 2 cups all-purpose flour
  2. 1 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  3. 1/2 cup baking cocoa powder
  4. 3/4 teaspoon salt
  5. 1 teaspoon baking soda
  6. 2 teaspoons baking powder
  7. 2 large eggs
  8. 1/2 cup canola or vegetable oil
  9. 1 cup milk, I used skim
  10. 1/2 cup water
  11. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  12. 3 oz. semisweet or dark chocolate, melted
For the Frosting
  1. 3 oz cream cheese, softened
  2. 1 tablespoon milk
  3. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  4. 1/8 teaspoon salt
  5. 2 oz semisweet or dark chocolate, melted and slightly cooled
  6. 2 cups confectioners' sugar
  7. 2 tablespoons baking cocoa powder
  8. sprinkles, optional
  9. mini m&m's, optional
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9-x-13-inch baking pan. Set aside.
  2. 1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, salt, baking soda and baking powder. Add eggs (one at a time), oil, milk, water and vanilla. Whisk until smooth and then add the melted chocolate. Pour batter into prepared baking pan and place in the oven. Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let cool completely before frosting.
  3. 2. Once cake is cooled, cream together cream cheese, milk, vanilla, salt and melted chocolate. Add confectioners' sugar and cocoa powder until smooth. Frost cake and add sprinkles and mini m&m's, if desired. Place in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before cutting into slices. Enjoy!
  1. Cake will keep up to 5 days stored in an airtight container in the fridge.
